Main fields of
research and teaching: theory of theater and theory of lyric poetry,
contemporary Latin American Literature, Latin American cultures, and
modern Spanish Literature. He also is the Director of the journal GESTOS,
which is housed in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Prof. Villegas
teaches courses on theory of theater, Latin American theater, Spanish
contemporary theater. In his recent courses on theater, he has intensely
used video tapes of theatrical representation to study actual performances and
theater as a mise-en-scene. Former Chair of the Department (1973-1976
and 1987-1994)
His recent research emphasizes the re-writing of literary histories,
especially theater, and the need for new strategies able to capture
theater as a cultural proyect and the interrelationship between power,
culture and theater and modes of visual representations.
Villegas was awarded the Ollantay prize (Venezuela, 1990) and the Armando
Discépolo Prize (Argentina, 1996) for his research on Latin American
theater.
Villegas was appointed Profesor Honorario de la Facultad de Artes de
la Universidad de Chile starting August 1999.
Prof. Villegas's most recent books are: Para un modelo de historia
del teatro and Para la interpretación del teatro como construcción
visual.
He is working on Pragmatica del teatro y la cultura en America Latina,
and Historia multicultual del teatro de América Latina a long
monograph tentativaly intitled Teatralidad como estrategia multicultural
y multidisciplinaria.
