I have published extensively in Europe, the United States, and Latin America on subjects dealing with modern literature, film, contemporary aesthetics, and European intellectual history. I have published twelve books and more than one hundred essays that have appeared in collective volumes and journals. I lecture regularly in the United States and Europe and I teach courses and seminars at various universities in the world. Additionally, I belong to the editorial boards of several international journals.

My course offerings cover from the 18th century to current Spanish literature, film, and European intellectual history. I also direct the activities of the Film Forum.

My approach to criticism and the aesthetic experience is broad and integrative. The links between cognitive paradigms and the intercrossings, affinities, and conflicts between different undercurrents of critical thought are a central focus of my work. Both my critical essays as well as my novels incorporate this view of the aesthetic experience. The visual arts, popular culture, architecture, and various central issues of intellectual history are among the topics that I incorporate into my methodology.
