I am currently working on a book on El carnero, a XVIIth century chronicle on the first one hundred years of the Nuevo Reino de Granada, written by Juan Rodríguez Freile. El carnero is one of the most important and unique texts of the Latin American Colonial period. It marks a crucial development: from the chronicles of conquest and discovery, to the writing of a colonial subject, confronting the social and administrative realities of the new territories. This singular change entails fundamental reconfigurations in the perception of topography, individuals, and the community as a whole, and the way they are represented in narrative. The writing of history confronts these issues by articulating different discursive practices that, in their desire to unite experience with the cultural archive, transform language and meanings in new and unexpected ways.

My research interests also include the study of autobiographies, memoirs, and the configuration of forms of selfhood during the colonial period, but also in the contemporary Caribbean. I am interested particularly in Puerto Rican autobiographies, a recent development among intellectuals, politicians and artists in the island.

With regards to teaching, I have had the opportunity to offer a wide variety of language, literature and culture courses. I have taught Colonial Latin American literature, Puerto Rican literature in the island and in the United States, contemporary Latin American literature, critical theory courses, and culture of the Hispanic Caribbean.

Sample course titles:

-Engendering America (Gender in Colonial Latin America)
-Colonial Legacies
-Fictions of Memory
