I have published a book on Baltasar Gracián, entitled Lenguaje y crisis: las alegorías del Criticón (Madrid: Editorial Fundamentos, 1998). The book studies in detail Baltasar Gracián's El Criticón as a complex manifestation of Baroque culture in Spain. The main theoretical approaches deal primarily with spatial representations, the modeling of subjectivities that defined and constructed men and women as historical entities, and linguistic exploration and creativity in the Baroque.

My subsequent research has dealt with spatial and visual representations in several authors from the Renaissance and Baroque periods in Spain. I have published articles on Cervantes' Persiles y Sigismunda and on "El celoso extremeño", as well as on Garcilaso de la Vega, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, and forthcoming articles on Antonio de Guevara and the Abencerraje. I would define my research as the study of Golden Age discourses and the way they articulate visual and spatial configurations, especially as they relate to court society, countryside, cultural encounters, frontiers, privacy, images of the house, and gender mobility and limitations. I have also published articles on virtual reality and recent visual technologies.

I have taught courses in Don Quijote, Golden Age poetry and narrative, as well as courses in theory. I recently taught a seminar in theory entitled Fields of Vision: Golden Age Texts, which followed closely my most recent research interests. Theoretical content is a crucial component of most of my courses, as well as criticism and historical contextualization of all texts read in class. The main pedagogical purpose of my course offerings is to familiarize students with the most important critical commentary on the authors discussed, formulate new critical problems by means of readings and discussion of theoretical issues, and always contextualize these problems within the historical parameters of each and every text and author. Ample opportunities for research and participation are provided in each course.
