14th Annual Mexican Conference: University of California, Irvine
"THE OTHER MEXICOS / LOS OTROS MÉXICOS"
April 10-12, 2008
The UCI Department of Spanish & Portuguese and UC Mexicanistas are sponsoring the Fourteenth Annual Mexican Conference. This year's conference will be dedicated to the discussion of marginal portrayals of Mexico, unconventional modes of representation, and discourses that challenge the dominant views of national and supranational, familiar forms of identity. This conference will feature Carlos Montemayor, a well known writer who is also a major editor, critic, and promoter of contemporary literature written in Indigenous languages; Natalia Toledo Paz, a poet from Juchitán, Oaxaca, who writes in Zapotec; as well as academics from the U.S. and Mexico who are conducting research on themes related to this topic.
The conference will emphasize, but is not limited to, the following topics:
  • Minority literature or culture: indigenous, native, regional, linguistic, religious, etc.
  • Minor literature or culture (in the sense used by Deleuze and Guattari)

  • Jewish-Mexican literature or culture.
  • Mexican expatriate cultural production, i.e., Chicano/a literature, exile literature.
  • Alterity and identity.
  • Representations of unconventional views of Mexico.
  • Non-canonical literature and media.
We will also consider papers on other topics not related to this year's theme. Papers should be written in either Spanish or English.
