Get a pen pal online, or ask your instructor to hook you up with a "mystery pal" from another section. Be careful as to what information you disclose (don’t ever tell anyone your full name, your phone number or your address--you may even choose to use a pseudonym). Make sure to print out your letters and any responses (at least 2 "clean" exchanges) and hand them in to your instructor. |

Watch at least 2 episodes of a telenovela (Hispanic soap operas only run for about 4 months so it’s not hard to figure out the entire plot after watching two shows). Write up (in Spanish) a list of the main characters and their characteristics and then summarize the episodes you have watched. This should take one page. Next, write up your own scene involving some of the characters (2 pages of dialogue). Turn in all three pages to your instructor. Hint: this activity can be done as a group but it must (in addition to turning in 3 pages) be presented in class, complete with props. If you aren’t turned on by soap operas you could also watch the talk show Cristina, do a write-up, and then create your own episode. See detailed instructions below for Telenovelas. |

Collect a short lectura from a book, newspaper, magazine or internet site (around 200 words) that utilizes a grammatical point you have missed, and explain the grammatical rule behind its use in the reading passage. For example, if you have confused the uses of the preterite and imperfect, cut out a newspaper article and underline each verb explaining, one by one on a separate page, the reason for each conjugation in the pret. or imp., likewise with the prepositions por/para, or the indicative/subjunctive moods.
