What is the application deadline for the current year?
The deadline for Summer 2010 applications is March 15, 2010.

A brief overview about the program:
The department of English at the University of California, Irvine offers a Summer Master's in English program designed especially for teachers and returning students who are interested in strengthening their command of literature, as well as honing their critical and literacy skills. Though teachers are the main intended constituency, we also have mature students who, for other reasons, wish to return to a terminal graduate program. The degree offered reflects UC Irvine's emphasis on literary theory, literary history, and expository writing, and is the same as the one earned by the Department's full-time graduate students, with the exception that foreign language proficiency is not required in the summer program.

Approximately 20 students are admitted each summer, with 20 students continuing from the preceding summer. The limited enrollment each summer is intended to ensure small classes and accessible faculty - the essential conditions for intensive literary study.

Students elect eight seminars over two consecutive summers. The summer is comprised of two five-week sessions. Students enroll in two seminars each session, completing a total of four classes over a summer. Each seminar meets for two hours per day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students also are required to write the Master's Essay which normally follows the completion of 32 quarter units of course work.

What are the dates and tuition amount?
Summer 2010 classes will meet from June 15 - August 19, 2010. Tuition is approximately $3,200 per summer. Financial aid is available.

What is a Statement of Purpose?
In one page or less, tell us how the Summer M.A. in English program will help you meet your personal and professional goals.

What is the GRE?
Students are required to take the GRE (Graduate Record Exam). You may obtain information, registration and test dates at: GRE. Indicate that you wish the scores to be sent to the Dept. of English at the address below. We urge you to complete the exam well in advance of the March 15, 2010 deadline to ensure timely receipt of your scores by our department. The subject (Literature in English) exam is no longer required for admission.

What is the TOEFL Exam?
All applicants whose primary language is not English are required to submit TOEFL scores for admission consideration. International graduate students should visit the International Center's website at: International Center and the Graduate Studies website at:
International Students for University-wide admissions requirements. The application fee for international students is $80.00.

What is the procedure for submitting my transcripts?
We require two official copies of transcripts from the institution which granted your baccalaureate degree. Request the Registrar of your institution to send the transcripts in a sealed envelope directly to the department address:

Chad Horn, Program Administrator
Summer Master's Program in English
Department of English
435 Humanities Instructional Building
University of California
Irvine, CA 92697-2650

Request transcripts from the institution where you earned your teaching credential or other master's degrees. Do not request transcripts from junior college or non-degree post-baccalaureate or extension work.

How do I submit a Letter of Recommendation?
We require three Letters of Recommendation. These letters should specifically address your experience or expertise in working with literature. Your ideal recommender would be one of your former professors - rather than a fellow teacher or principal - who can assess your academic abilities. Letters of recommendation may be submitted online or on paper via regular mail sent to the Summer Master's Program in English.

Online submission:

Letters may be submitted online after you have completed your electronic application. Please visit: Letter of Recommendation for instructions.

Paper Submission:

Provide your recommender with a signed Letter of Recommendation form (used for ranking purposes) and a completed Waiver of Access form. Both forms are available for downloading at: Paper Submission

If you choose not to sign the Waiver of Access form, you must still provide the unsigned form to the recommenders and request them to complete and sign their portion. Recommenders should send their letters and both forms, which they have signed, to:

Chad Horn

Department of English
435 Humanities Instructional Building

How do I submit a writing sample?
We require a writing sample which ideally should reveal your ability to treat literary texts critically and to write cogently and persuasively. Critical, argumentative, and scholarly papers from related fields are acceptable. No page requirement is set; however, 5-10 pages is an appropriate length. You may submit a paper from a former class, rewrite an old paper and submit it, use an honors thesis, or assign yourself a new topic. The writing sample is the most critical element of your application, and in many cases, becomes the deciding factor.

Send your writing sample to:

Am I eligible for campus housing?

I am unfamiliar with the campus. Is there a map available?
A map of our campus, an area map of Southern California and driving directions are available at: Campus Map.

What is the admission criteria?
Criteria for admission seek to balance test results, GPA, letters of recommendation, and your writing sample, though in many cases a strong writing sample will count most heavily.
