2017-2018 Jordan Center for Persian Studies Scholar in Residence: Dr. Mahmoud Omidsalar

The renowned scholar of Persian epics and the Shahnameh, Dr. Mahmoud Omidsalar, is the 2017-2018 Jordan Center for Persian Studies Scholar in Residence.

Dr. Omidsalar obtained his PhD in Persian Literature and Folklore from the Department of Near Eastern Studies, University of California, Berkeley. He is the consulting editor for folklore for the Encyclopaedia Iranica and has written many of the entries on the subject. Together with late Iraj Afshar, he is the editor of the series Folia Medica Iranica and Persian Manuscripts in Facsimile. His books include The Shahnameh of Ferdowsi, co-edited with Dr. Djalal Khaleghi-Motlagh, vol. 6, Bibliotheca Persica, 2005 and Poetics and Politics of Iran’s National Epic, the Shāhnāmeh, Palgrave Macmillan; 2011. He is currently working on a new edition of the Garshasb-nāmeh, an important Persian epic. While at the Jordan Center, he will be giving lectures on Persian epics and the beginning of Classical Persian literature.
