My research interests, broadly defined, concern productions of knowledge in the Muslim world. I have been studying the development of professional cultures in the contemporary Islamic world. Methodologically, I have done comparative and multi-sited work from an interdisciplinary perspective. For this I have been looking into two transnational communities, the scientific community and the artist community – two communities whose cultural productions involve interaction of people, objects, and discourses. My projects thematically cover a wide range of topics that concern culture and politics in the Muslim world and its diasporas, including the imaginaries of Muslim scientists, transnational networks, religion, technology, and mediation (various media types including the evolving new media), aesthetics and politics in the context of Islamic resurgence.
My publications include a book, a book section, several articles on such areas as Islam and globalization, and book reviews. I have taught at University of Pittsburgh, Yale University, The New School University, and Emerson College. I was a resident scholar at the Center for Cultural Studies at UCSC during the academic year 2006-07. I have also had post-doctoral appointments at Harvard and NYU.
