The Latin American Studies Center presents two films from indigenous Mexico,

MOOD, 2014, 5:17 min.

Teacher Genaro gathers abandoned objects from his surroundings in the effort to combat depression.

and

MËJK, 2014, 42 min.

While teaching elementary school in a Mixe community, protagonist Genaro learns a few things himself, along with new work also by filmmaker Carlos Pérez Rojas (Mixe, Oaxaca).

During the 1990s, Carlos Pérez Rojas was a member of an independent community-based organization, Video Tamix, that produced Mixe-language radio, video and local television, transmitting from the Sierra Mixe in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Here we see some examples of his experimental video and documentary portraiture. Dr. Erica Wortham is a videomaker and Visual Anthropologist who has conducted research for many years on indigenous media in Latin America. She is the author of INDIGENOUS MEDIA IN MEXICO: CULTURE, COMMUNITY, AND THE STATE (Duke University Press, 2013)

Preceded by a small reception in HG courtyard at 5 p.m., and followed by a q&a with Prof. Erica Wortham (Georgetown University)

Co-sponsored by the UCI Department of Film and Media Studies, UCHRI, and the Bowers Museum
