Deanna Ong

OngDeanna Ong is currently a senior at UC Irvine studying Literary Journalism and International Studies. Her writing has been published in p o p Magazine, The Writing Disorder, and Around Alhambra, her hometown’s local newspaper. She is particularly interested in street art and the urban landscape. For a class project in the 4th grade, Ong said her top three goals were to travel the world, write stories, and marry a hot chef. After graduation, she’s not exactly sure what she’s going to do, but those same three goals still sound pretty appealing to her.

The story behind the story: I met Fusco through a friend of a friend in Los Angeles. We had quite a few interviews, went on a couple of car rides exploring the streets of L.A., and I even got treated to a graffiti demo. Through Fusco I learned about graffiti beyond its reputation as vandalism and beyond the assumption that it is inevitably gang-related. As he says, “What you see on the wall is only half the story.”
