Patrick Appel

AppelIn 2007, Patrick Appel graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta from
UC Irvine with degrees in Literary Journalism and Studio Arts. He wrote this piece for Amy Wilentz’s course, “Writing about Place.” This article was also published in Jaded a UC Irvine publication that Patrick helped write and edit during college, and the article won a UC Irvine Upper Division writing award for Effective Public Writing. Patrick is currently finishing an editorial internship with The Atlantic Monthly and recently accepted a one-year position with that publication, beginning in January of 2008.

Patrick grew up in Pleasant Hill, California, but is currently living in Washington, D.C. He reads an great number of magazines and blogs, perusing several hundred news sources a day. He is also an accomplished artist, specializing in painting and sculpture.
