The term “Abrahamic religions” has gained considerable currency in both scholarly and ecumenical circles as a way of referring to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  In her lecture, Carol Bakhos will explore the extent to which these three religions are Abrahamic. Through her analysis of the concept of the family of Abraham in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, she will demonstrate the problematic nature of the category and thus will call it into question.

Carol Bakhos is Professor of Late Antique Judaism and Jewish Studies and director of the UCLA Center for the Study of Religion. Her publications include Ishmael on the Border: Rabbinic Portrayals of the First Arab (2006), The Family of Abraham: Jewish, Christian, and Muslim Interpretations (2014), and two edited volumes: Judaism in its Hellenistic Context (2004) and Current Trends in the Study of Midrash (2006).
