From an intern working at Urban Land Institute, Orange County:

I applied for the Humanities Internship Program on a whim, not fully realizing what a positive and valuable experience the program would give me.  I was placed as the Communications Intern for the Urban Land Institute, Orange County; a non-profit, non-partisan land development and real estate organization.  Coming into the internship, I had absolutely no interest in real estate and land development; I just wanted to learn about public relations.  Not only have I learned various aspects of the Public Relations field through this internship, thanks to the patient guidance of my wonderful boss and co-worker, but I have learned a lot about a field that I previously had no interest in.  This is the second internship I have had since being at UCI and this internship is, by far, the best one.  I work in a small office, with my boss and one other colleague, both of whom have gone out of their way to make sure that I feel more like a valuable employee and less like a lowly intern.  They listen to my ideas, give me lots of feedback and teach me something new every day.  These different aspects that I have experienced are a rarity in most internships.

The Humanities Internship Program gives UCI students like me the opportunity to enhance their education.  For example, I have always wanted to study Communications, a program not offered at UCI. However, thanks to the internship that the Humanities Internship Program placed me in, I have been able to receive the education that I wanted from the classroom.  In fact, what I have learned about Communications and Public Relations in this internship goes far beyond what any classroom could teach.
