Opportunities at the ICWT
Schaeffer
Fellowships offer generous support to students
pursuing doctorates with emphases in Literary Translation
or Creative Nonfiction through the departments of
History, English, or Comparative Literature at UCI.
Glenn Schaeffer Awards
offer stipends to graduating UCI MFA students. By
nomination only.
Traslation Grants offer
support to translators for translations of literature
(fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and drama)
or theory into English. “Theory” refers
here to literary theory, translation theory, political
theory, or philosophy. The ICWT is particularly interested
in translations from cultures and languages that have
been marginalized and overlooked by the Anglo-American
canon. In addition, translations of rare and unique works from any language would also be very welcome.
The ICWT seeks to encourage the use of English to
“enable rather than disable.” These translations
will help to raise awareness of and interest in the
works themselves, their authors, and the languages
and the cultures from which they come. It is also
the hope that the translations in English will encourage
the translation of the texts into other languages.
In keeping with the Center’s mission, these
translation-grants will be “a means of giving
visibility to genius from even the most marginalized.”
These grants are intended to support the progress
and completion of a major translation-project in preparation
for publication.
