Welcome

Since 1997 Humanities Out There (HOT) has helped students gain the tools they need to reach their American dreams. HOT draws together public school teachers, graduate students, and undergraduate tutors in a shared enterprise of bringing innovative scholarship in the form of age appropriate curricula that enhance the critical thinking and writing skills of Santa Ana students. As teachers and mentors, UCI students bring a university education to public school classrooms.

I encourage you to explore Jupiter Launches, the HOT online journal where student stories and poems offer insight into their lives and their dreams. Visit Santa Ana on a Saturday morning as families jostle for space on the crowded sidewalks of 4th Street, some stopping to sample the wares of vendors hawking mangos and tamales. This is the community we engage as educators and students.

HOT is a collaborative enterprise between UCI’s School of Humanities and the Santa Ana Unified School District with support from UCI’s Center for Educational Partnerships in collaboration with UCI’s California History-Social Science Project. We are proud to work with the Santa Ana Partnership, a consortitum that includes UCI, Santa Ana College, and the Santa Ana Unified School District, as contributors to a federal GEAR UP grant, beginning in 2003-2004. We are also the proud recipients of a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, which supports our publication efforts.
