VIETMSE (F13)1A  FUNDAMENTALSTRAN, T.

This course is the first section in a series of three for first-year Vietnamese. Designed for beginners, the course focuses on the introduction of the Vietnamese phonological system with the main focus features such as the vowel system, the consonant system and the tonal system of the language. The Vietnamese alphabet and spelling techniques are also introduced. Other concentrations are simple sentence patterns used in everyday situations, basic vocabularies, the Vietnamese system of personal pronouns, and word order in Vietnamese. Initial introduction to Vietnamese culture is also integrated through the lessons. Five chapters from textbook "Elementary Vietnamese" will be covered in the course.

VIETMSE (F13)2A  INTERMEDIATETRAN, T.

This course is the first section in a three-part series of second-year Vietnamese. The course will focus on the expansion of vocabulary and grammar structures in the language. Contrast and comparisons between the Northern dialects and Southern dialects in terms of vocabulary, as well as more idiomatic use of the language are emphasized. The course also aims to improve students' spelling skills in Vietnamese. Topics for conversation are everyday life situations and issues in Vietnam as well as in the Vietnamese communities in the United States. The course will cover five chapters from the textbook "Contemporary Vietnamese". Prerequisite for 2A: Vietnamese 1C with grade of C or better, placement into 2A or equivalent.
