The Department of History is rich in diversity, creativity, and scholarship. With an international faculty prominent across the breadth of the field, students are exposed to many different approaches to the study of history. Visiting Faculty and Guest Lecturers from around the world supplement the faculty, and together, they introduce students to current issues and trends in the study of history.

The History Faculty includes nationally distinguished scholars in United States history, European history, Latin American history, Middle Eastern history, Asian history, and World history. These scholars enable the department to offer major fields of study in the history of the United States, Latin American History, English/European history, African/Middle Eastern history, and Asian history. The department is particularly strong in social, cultural, gender, and intellectual history and many participate in interdisciplinary programs offered throughout the university. We recently recruited two new professors who will greatly enhance our undergraduate and graduate offerings and we are currently searching to fill positions in French/European History, Southeast Asian History and Middle East History.

History courses are among the most popular at UC Irvine, and the reason is not hard to find. The study of history will actively prepare a student for any profession which requires a knowledge of humanity and society or demands training in the organization and communication of knowledge. It is a superb background for the journalist. Lawyers find history valuable for understanding the social context of law, for training in the evaluation of evidence, and for the presentation of their findings in plain English. Even doctors, scientists, engineers, and others whose business or professional activities seem to have little relation to history can find in historical study clarification of the moral and social dimensions of their work. Little wonder then that the best professional schools in the country are happy to accept students who have been exposed to the rigors of historical study. Additionally, our faculty are committed to making every course in History a stimulating intellectual experience. It is for these reasons that each year more than 3,000 students from every school on the UCI Campus enroll in history courses.

We welcome you to our department. If you have any questions please feel free to contact any of our faculty or staff.
