About the
Program
In September 2005, the Santa
Ana Unified School District was awarded a three-year, $1 million
grant from the California
Post-Secondary Education Commission for helping SAUSD history
teachers improve academic literacy through teaching history content.
This institute for grades 7-11 history teachers of
mainstreamed EL students and native speakers of English with low
reading and writing skills is designed around current research in
the field of academic literacy. Set in a scholarly, supportive environment,
the training provides teachers with the insight and strategies to
improve their own practice and tackle site-based and district-wide
challenges. During the upcoming institute, participants will learn
about writing with classroom-tested materials and proven literacy
strategies. Educators will present model curriculum that supports
attainment of the History-Social Science Framework goals.
