Using the Resources of the Library of Congress for K-5
The Library of Congress houses a treasure trove of primary source materials to engage young learners in historical inquiry and historical thinking. This two-day workshop for K-5 teachers will guide participants through the process of finding and utilizing these unique resources.

Sites of Encounter: Revolutions in World History
Hosted by the History Project at CSU Long Beach and UCI, this institute is open to all middle and high school world history teachers. We will focus on a variety of revolutions (political, social, agricultural, and technological) to consider change over time in world history. The institute will be at UCI June 24-27. Teachers will receive standards-aligned content presentations, model lessons, and materials.
Implementing the Common Core: Literacy in the History Classroom, Presented by the History Project at UC Irvine and CSU Dominguez Hills
History-Social Science is the perfect vehicle for teaching the new ELA/Literacy Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Model lessons and practical strategies for all CCSS strands (reading, writing, speaking & listening, and language) will be shared. Teachers will walk away with increased knowledge, motivation, and practical materials to implement the CCSS.

- an introduction to the Common Core State Standards,
- a focus on reading informational text with an emphasis on argument and textual evidence,
- and many practical examples for Common Core integration.
The workshop will be held at UC Irvine from 8:30-3:00 on July 8-11. Cost for registration is $550 and will include: instructors well versed in both theory and practice of teaching academic literacy in the classroom, standards-aligned materials, a Common Core workbook, online resources, parking, and breakfast.
The Cold War: Teaching with Primary Sources from the Library of Congress
The CSU Long Beach and UC Irvine History Projects and the UCLA History-Geography Project are offering a four-day workshop for 10th and 11th grade teachers focused on the Cold War. As part of this institute, teachers will be introduced to teacher-created materials aligned to the Common Core and will also have the opportunity to develop lessons for their classrooms. Scholar presentations will also be a part of the programming. Successful participants will receive a $400 stipend and instructional materials. There will be two mandatory follow-ups-one in the fall and one in the spring. This workshop will take place July 22-25 at CSU Long Beach, and parking will be provided.
