Hot Curriculum
Humanites Out There is an educational partnership between UCI's
School of Humanities and
the Santa Ana Unified School District, in cooperation with UCI's
Center for Educational Partnerships and UCI's California
History-Social Science Project. Founded in 1997, HOT reaches
over five hundred intermediate and high school students and their
teachers each year through its workshops on humanities topics.
With funding assistance from GEAR UP Santa Ana and an NEH grant,
graduate students work with K-12 teacher and university faculty consultants
to revise their lessons for publication. The materials are designed
to be user-friendly, ready to be photocopied and distributed to students.
The packets also include lists of books, films, and internet resources
that provide either practical background information or materials
that can be adapted easily for use in classrooms.
The resulting curricula have been distributed to teachers throughout
California and the nation and have been featured in the newsletter of
the Organization of American Historians. Due to copyright restrictions
on website availability, the CH/SSP cannot offer the entire curricula
on this site. However, you may request a free
copy of the curricula by contacting our grants manager, Peggie
Winters. In your message, please specify which grade-level curricula
you would like to receive. The materials are now available on CD-ROM
as well as on paper.
