Fellowships & Funding

• Where can I find out about external fellowship opportunities for Humanities graduate students?

• Where can I get help with a fellowship application?

Beth Riley in the Office of Research is available for one-on-one assistance with fellowship applications. Email her at Beth Riley for an appointment.

The School of Humanities offers an annual workshop on applying for fellowships and grants. Watch for an announcement from the Humanities Office of Graduate Study.

The Humanities Office of Graduate Study has begun collecting samples of successful external fellowship applications. To review samples, please stop by HIB 176 for assistance.

Graduate Student Employment

• What is the maximum number of quarters I can work as a Teaching Assistant?

Doctoral students who have not advanced to candidacy may be appointed as a Teaching Assistant for a maximum of 12 quarters. Following advancement to candidacy, a doctoral candidate is allowed to be appointed for an additional six quarters for a total maximum of 18 appointment quarters.

• What exactly are the "local fees" I pay when I'm a TA?

The campus-based fees, or "local fees" include: Associated Graduate Student Fee, Student Center Fee, Bren Events Center Fee, and Recreation Center Fee. Local fees are currently $256.50 per quarter.

Prospective Students

• Can I apply for more than one program?

Yes. However, separate applications and application fees are required.

• Can I apply for an MA degree only?

The only terminal MA degree programs offered in the School of Humanities are:

History MA

Summer MA in English

• Am I required to have completed an MA degree before applying for a Ph.D.?

No. Completion of the Bachelor's degree (with a minimum GPA of 3.0) is required for applying for a Ph.D.

• May I defer admission if I am accepted?

The Graduate Division allows students to defer admission for up to one year with the approval of their academic program. Fellowship or other financial support offers may not be deferred in any cases.
