Del escenario a la mesa de la crítica is a collection of essays which focus on the Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Cádiz, held from October 17 -26, 1996 (FIT-96). Most of the essays were written by members of the Irvine Hispanic Theater Research Group (housed in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, University of California, Irvine). FIT has been held every year in October since 1985, and is one of the most important theater festivals for Latin American and Spanish Theater.

Although there are many international theater festivals, there are very few books published which focus in their significance. Del escenario a la mesa de la crítica is a in depth analysis of the plays performed, the trends they represent and the meaning of the Festival in the context of contemporary theatrical trends.

In FIT 96 the theatrical groups were very representative of new theatrical trends in Latin America and Spain. The essays represent a theoretical and historical contribution regarding new trends in critical discourses and the difficulties or potential inadequacies of critical discourses from dominant cultures facing the interpretation of theatrical discourses from alternative cultures or different cultural contexts.

Del escenario a la mesa de la crítica is an important contribution to the history of Spanish and Latin American theaters.
