The Irvine Proceedings include a selection of revised papers presented at the Asociación Internacional de Hispanistas' conference held at University of California, Irvine in August 1992. From the 340 papers presented at the conference, the ACTAS Irvine-92 includes 180 selected essays and 4 special presentations by keynote speakers. The Irvine conference emphasized the cultural interrelation between different Hispanic fields, and for the first time in the history of this conference, Chicano and US Latino literatures and women's literature became important topics of discussion.
The essays are distributed in five thematic volumes. The first one focuses on linguistics, philology and theories of language as strategies to study literature. The second includes essays on women's discourses and the representation of women in literary texts. The third and the fourth volumes center on cross-cultural exchanges, and the reading of texts in their cultural contexts. Volume five includes essays in which the emphasis is on reading and re-reading individual texts from the perspective of contemporary strategies. In each volume the literature from Spain, Latin America and Hispanics in the United States are studied.
The Irvine Proceedings represents an intellectual contribution for understanding the relationship between Spain, Latin America and Hispanic cultures in the United States by scholars from Europe, the United States and Latin America. The publication represents a very contemporary approach to re-reading historical events and literary texts with new theoretical and historical tools.
