The Department makes every effort to find financial support for both incoming and continuing students admitted
to the program. In recent years the Department has been able to offer multi-year packages in the form of
fellowships and graduate teaching assistantships.
A number of prestigious fellowships are awarded to superior students pursuing the doctoral degree. The
Chancellor's Fellowships, the Humanities Pre-Doctoral Fellowships, and the Regent's
Fellowships are all available to entering students. Awards may include a stipend, all required student
fees and, where applicable, nonresident tuition. Through the Graduate Diversity Program, Cota-Robles
Fellowships and Graduate Opportunity Fellowships are awarded to entering students who may be
disadvantaged in higher education in the United States. Candidates are nominated on the basis of their
merit and contributions to the diversity of the Department or the discipline.
Other fellowships are available for continuing graduate students, including tuition-waivers for outstanding
non-resident students, research assistantships and dissertation fellowships.
The Department offers Teaching Assistantships on the basis of academic credentials. Renewal of
these appointments is contingent upon demonstrated competence in teaching and a good record in academic work.
The Department encourages students to pursue their work in a French-speaking country. Funding for study
abroad is available from various sources: the Office of Graduate Studies, departmental monies, external
fellowships and grants. Each year, an exchange program allows a student to pursue research in Paris while
serving as a Lecturer at the Université de Paris X Nanterre.
The Chancellor's Fellowships are the most prestigious in the Humanities and are awarded to outstanding
applicants on a competitive basis. They carry a stipend of $16,000, cover full fees and one year of non-resident
tuition, and provide dissertation year support. Chancellor's Fellows hold teaching assistantships in the second,
third, and fourth years. On-campus housing is normally guaranteed. The Humanities Pre-Doctoral Fellowship
provides similar support in a five-year package.
Regents Fellowships offer stipends up to $14,000 a year and can be awarded to supplement teaching
assistantships or to provide Fee Fellowships (covering fees and health insurance) or Tuition Fellowships for
non-resident or international students.
Diversity Fellowships are awarded to deserving students who can demonstrate that they have overcome
socio-economic and/or educational limitations. The Eugene Cota-Robles Fellowship provides support for
the first two years of enrollment and teaching assistantship support for an additional two years. The
Graduate Opportunity Fellowship carries a stipend for the first year and a teaching assistantship for
years two and three. All in-state student fees and medical insurance are covered by these fellowships.
Teaching Assistantships are awarded on an annual basis. In 2004-2005 teaching assistants earned $14,500
for the full year for teaching one course per quarter. In addition to salary, TAs receive payment of health
insurance and of the major part of in-state fees.
