| Isabel Bouligny | Emphasis: Modern Europe | | As a dual British-American citizen, traveling throughout Europe has always been a passion of mine. I was exposed to the wonderful European ways of life from a very young age, and as I grew older I knew that this was something that I could continuously learn from and appreciate. Today, I'm a senior European Studies Major with a concentration in "Modern Europe" here at UC Irvine. I came to UCI without knowing exactly what I wanted to do with a degree in European studies, but I knew it would lead to something creative. With my minor in Educational Studies, I realized very soon after studying in London for a semester, that I wanted to work with students to study abroad all over the world and to make their dreams a reality. One day I hope to become an on-site director in a study abroad destination to lead college students on their adventures! The European Studies Major is a great interdisiplinary major and working with staff so closely has only lead to great opportunities. |

Emphasis: French Studies |
| Hello to all those in or interested in the European Studies major! I am a 4th year European Studies major with an emphasis on French Studies. I took 4 years of French in high school and fell in love with the language and culture. I became interested in this major because it allowed me to not only focus on the grammatical and logistic part of the French language but also take courses on the history, culture and literature of France. It has been nice to choose from classes focused on the language (such as reading and writing in French) as well as classes on French Cinema, French Colonies, Art History etc. Although I plan to attend graduate school for Art and Photography, I still plan on using everything I have learned of French history, culture, art and media and involving it into my art work. I strongly believe that studies in other cultures helps expand the mind and art work and I plan to pursue that in my masters program. I really encourage the European Studies program because there are so many emphases to choose from. The program gives a lot of room to explore the emphasis of your choice from several approaches such as Art History, Issues, Sociology and many more. I really enjoyed the fact that I could take classes for my emphasis from many departments at UCI. Feel free to contact me regarding any questions of the program or just to know more about my personal experience at saavedrd@uci.edu. |

Emphasis: Modern Europe |
Academic Interests: The function of public space within urban centers, and whether or not ‘public space’ is truly constructed as open space for all users of the urban environment. The development of the modern European city, and how various groups are represented within this city space.
Interest in European Studies: European Studies is an interdisciplinary major, which allows students to pursue a well-rounded humanities degree by requiring a mix of history, cultural studies, political science, comparative literature, art history, and other humanities disciplines. I particularly enjoyed the major because it allowed me to mix and match various history, art, philosophy and literature classes that caught my interest.
Future Plans: Attaining a Masters Degree in Urban, Regional Planning, and pursuing a career in the development of open community space for youths, specifically, skate parks. |

Emphasis: Russian Studies |
| I’m a 3rd year and double majoring in Psychology and Social Behavior, and European Studies with emphasis on Russia. I was born and raised in Russia for 11 years. I moved to the United States 9 years ago. When I left Russia, I was pretty young and I did not have much knowledge of Russian history and literature. Many people asked me questions about Russia that I could not answer. Since Russia is so rich in history and literature, I decided that I should have some knowledge about my own country. Russia is very fascinating; it’s full of brilliant authors, and captivating history. Russian culture, language, and traditions are very interesting, and very different compared to Americans. I think being familiar with different cultures is very important in life. Being familiar with different cultures, allows you better to understand how people view the world. You realize that people have different opinions, views and life style, which leads you to be more open minded, and be more successful in life. European Studies curriculum is very flexible. It allows you to take classes from different areas, and you always have good options to choose from. After UCI I plan to attend graduate program in psychology. I plan to combine both of my majors in my future career. For me, as a future psychologist, I think it is very important for me to be able to understand how different people perceive life. If you have any question you can email me at dclausse@uci.edu. |
