English and Comparative Literature Dissertation Colloquium: Jens Lloyd

Title:
Campus Connections: Using Campus-Based Pedagogy to Experiment with Ethos and Rewrite Pedagogical Environments

Bio:
Jens Lloyd is a PhD candidate in English. He researches the geographies and ecologies of rhetoric, writing, and literacy. He is writing a dissertation about campuses and the UCI campus in particular wherein he argues that, despite rampant speculation about their imminent demise, campuses serve as dynamic social and material environments for rhetorical education and college writing.

Description of talk:
This talk derives from the fourth and final chapter of his dissertation. Though much of the dissertation is concerned with cocurricular rhetorical habits and literate activities such as those tied to student organizations and those sponsored by the campus newspaper, this chapter considers how the dynamic pedagogical environment of the campus can be formally integrated into writing and rhetoric courses. Supported by an extensive literature review on the topic, Jens shares findings from his research into one instructor's efforts to implement campus-based assignments in lower-division courses. He argues that such assignments succeed when, blurring the lines between the curriculum and the cocurriculum, they encourage students and instructors alike to become critical, active inhabitants of an evolving geography.
