Course Description
The fourth-year Japanese course, 101A-B-C, builds on the foundation of linguistic skills and knowledge culture that students have acquired in their first three years of language. Students will be exposed to various genres of authentic texts, such as 俳句、短歌、詩、エッセイ、ショートショート、小説、評論、情報記事. The primary goal of this course is for students to become able to critically read and interpret these texts and discuss both the content and linguistic forms orally and in writing. A variety of social issues will be addressed along with these texts.

Text: Will be either provided in class or available online to printout
Supplementary: シグマ新国語便覧 (2007). 文英堂

 Grading:
   Above 96%=A+…..86%=B+….76%=C+…..66%=D+…..Below 60%=F

*The percentage figures given above are only used as “guidelines.”  Final grades will be adjusted taking into consideration the “grade curve,” i.e. the distribution of all students’ grade points.

Minimum Grade: In order to advance to the next level, a student must achieve a grade of C or better.

Grade Option: A student cannot change from a letter grade option to P/N after the end of the second week. This policy is strictly enforced regardless of your own school's policy.

Add/Drop Policy: A student may add or drop a course in the School of Humanities up to the end of the second week of classes with the instructor's signature. Requests to add or drop after the second week will be granted only in exceptional circumstances. This policy is strictly enforced regardless of your own school's policy.

Class Participation: When a student is observed not eagerly participating in class activities (talking in English, studying for other classes, taking a nap, etc.), some points (1-10%) will be subtracted from their final score.

Attendance: Points will be subtracted from your final score (0.5% per absence) for unexcused absences and tardiness.

Excused Absences: Absences can be excused in cases of illness, family emergency, and other unforeseeable incidents beyond the control of a student. A signed note from a person who can verify the reason for the absence (e.g., a note from a doctor in case of illness, etc.) and his/her phone number are required.

Make-up Test Policy: Make-up tests will not be permitted, unless you inform your instructor within 12 hours by e-mail that you were prevented from attending class on a test/quiz day due to some unforeseen circumstance or dire emergency. However, it will remain at the discretion of the instructor as to whether a make-up is allowed or not.

Homework: Completion of homework assignments plays a crucial part in your contribution to cooperative learning among your classmates, as well as being for your own benefit. Late homework will not be accepted except in cases of excusable absences. Each assignment must be done carefully, thoughtfully, and completely for full credit.
