'How to type in Japanese'

What software will you need?
You will have to have some kind of Japanese software. The HIRC has a Mac Lab and PC lab where all the computers are equipped with a Japanese language kit.

What is the advantage of using word-processing as opposed to handwriting?
Your essay will look nicer and be easier for readers to read, and editing your work will be made easier, too.

How to begin?
If you are using a Mac, hold down the apple key, and hit the space bar. You have now converted from English word-processing to Japanese word-processing. You should also see a red symbol in the upper right corner of your screen. If a blue diamond still appears in that corner, you are still using the English word processor.

How to type in ひらがな:

Just type as you would write the word in rooma-ji and then hit the return key.
Example: To type わたし, type "watashi", and hit the return key.

For long vowels, you have to type the word as it would be written in hiragana and not as it sounds.
Example: To type おはよう, type "ohayou," not "ohayoo."

To type ん、you have to type 'n' twice.
Example: To type きんようび, type "kinnyoubi."

For small や、ゆ、よ as in きゃく、しゅうまつ、しょくじ、
type as it appears in rooma-ji: kyaku, shuumatsu, shokuji

For small つ、as in きってand ちょっと, type the consonants twice which follow the small つ.
Example: きってand ちょっと

For topic marker 「は」, type "ha"
For object marker 「を」, type "wo"
For direction marker 「へ」, type "he"

How to type カタカナ:

Type a katakana word just as you would do a hiragana word, and then hit the space bar. It should automatically be converted into katakana if the word is commonly written in katakana.

To write your name or an uncommon word, hold down the CAPSLOCK key, and from then on, everything you type will appear in katakana. For the vowel lengthener, simply type a "dash."

How to type かんじ:

Type a word and hit the space bar. The computer automatically will choose a kanji for the word. If the chosen kanji is not correct, hit the space bar until you get the right kanji.

Punctuations:
Japanese period [。] → Press . (period)
Japanese comma[、] → Press , (comma)
Japanese open quote..「 → Press [
Japanese end quoteノ 」 → Press ]

Typing Tips:

Convert a sentence phrase by phrase.
Example: to type the sentence ”今日は水曜日です。”:
Type (1) kyou (2) ha <hit the space bar to convert to kanji>
