* In 2A-B-C, you will be assigned 2 TYPED research papers/Quarter. In order to nurture and improve your ability to write accurately and clearly in Japanese, we are encouraged to seek additional help by having your initial draft corrected by either a native speaker or utilizing an on-line correction site, such as LANG-8 or GOOGLEDOCS (of course, within the parameters of the Academic Honesty policies for UC).

*
If you plan ahead, you can also have your new draft that you have re-typed checked by your instructor, as long as it is up to the day before the due date (no same-day checking allowed).

*
If you have someone correct your composition, it is required that you hand in BOTH YOUR ORIGINAL DRAFT (NO English allowed even on the initial draft) WITH HANDWRITTEN CORRECTIONS OR ON-LINE FEEDBACK AND FINAL VERSION.

*The best way to do this is to print out a hard copy of what you have composed and bring it to whomever will do the correcting for you. When the correcting is done, then you do all the re-writing on your own. The reasoning behind allowing this privilege is for you to have the opportunity to improve your writing skills and to encourage you in learning to express yourself in Japanese.

HOWEVER, it is imperative that you follow the following procedures when having someone help you with your writing:
a) The individual doing the correcting may NOT re-write your paper electronically (such as using "Track Changes," etc.).
b) The individual doing the correcting may NOT sit beside you while you are at the computer and correct your writing as you type, etc.
c) You are prohibited from having your paper corrected in any way that does not require YOU to do the actual physical re-writing.
If you have any concerns with reference to the above, DO NOT HESITATE to speak to your instructor.

* Try to get to know a native speaker on campus (there are many students from Japan taking ESL courses, here as exchange students, members of the Communication Club and JSA-Japan Students' Association, etc.). Your instructor will also be offering you some assistance in this as the opportunity arises.

WARNING: However, if after receiving help, your paper appears to overly-exceed the level of Japanese that is expected at this time, then you can expect to be asked by your instructor in their office to demonstrate the competency that is reflected in your final product.
