Mrs. Patricia Foster
Recipient of the Distinguished Foundation/Trust Leadership Award at the School of Humanities is the Ralph W. and Leona B. Gerard Family Trust. Since 1990, this trust has provided significant support to various academic units at UCI including the English and Comparative Literature and Art History departments. This year, the Gerard Family Trust, through its trustee Patricia Foster, has created a $150,000 endowment and award gift for graduate fellowships in the Graduate Program in Visual Studies. For their continued support of UCI and of our School of Humanities for over a decade, we are proud to present the Ralph W. and Leona B. Gerard Family Trust with the School of Humanities Distinguished Foundation/Trust Leadership Award.

Michael KoehnEconomics
KoehnBeginning his academic career at UCI, Michael Koehn (B.A. Economics, 1974) went on to earn an MBA from USC and a Ph.D. from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He served as a Senior Economist with the prestigious Arthur D. Little Company before taking the reigns of The Analyst Group in 1981. He was named to the Board of Directors for The Analyst Group in 1997. Dr. Koehn has served on the Dean's Advisory Council at the School of Humanities since 1998 where he has been instrumental in providing the school with advice and assistance in creating new chair projects as well as new financial mechanisms such as the Institutional Builders Fund to finance these projects. His key interests at the School of Humanities have been in the areas of graduate fellowships, public lectures in Critical Theory, and the Chair in Humanities in Rhetoric and Communication. It is our privilege to recognize Dr. Michael Koehn with the School of Humanities Distinguished Alumni & Friends Leadership Award.

Marianne McDonaldClassics
McDonaldMarianne McDonald (Ph.D. in Classics, 1975) is the founder and initiator of projects to computerize Greek literature and Irish literature. Currently a Professor of Theatre and Classics at University of California, San Diego, she is also a member of the Royal Irish Academy, a visiting lecturer at the University of Dublin, and has honorary degrees from the American College of Greece, the University of Dublin, the Archeological Institute of Greece, and the University of Thessaloniki. She has received the UCI Medal, distinguished medals from the cities of Athens, Delphi, and Piraeus, the University of Thessaloniki and the National University of Ireland. She is also the recipient of the Order of the Phoenix, which is the highest award granted by the nation of Greece. Dr. McDonald is a pioneer in the field of modern versions of the classics in films, plays, and opera. She has also received the Gold Star Award by the San Diego Performing Arts for her work with the arts in San Diego and the Patte˘ Award for Theatre Excellence from KPBS (Public Television). For over 30 years, she has provided support for Thesaurus Linguae Graecae and other humanities and UCI projects. It is an honor to award Dr. Marianne McDonald with the School of Humanities Distinguished Alumni & Friends Leadership Award.

LaVonne SmithEnglish
SmithLaVonne Smith (B.A. English, 1994) has been a strong supporter of the Humanities Associates since her graduation. She serves on the boards of the Humanities Associates and Dean's Advisory Council support groups and has hosted events at her home for the Humanities Out There (H.O.T.) program. This year, Mrs. Smith also established an endowment to provide support for the H.O.T. program's graduate tutors and their work in Santa Ana's K-12 schools. In addition to her work as Vice-President of CareerSmith, Inc., LaVonne has been a tireless supporter for the School of Humanities. It is a pleasure to recognize LaVonne Smith's efforts this year with the School of Humanities Distinguished Alumni & Friends Leadership Award.
