We shall try to spotlight
the basic ideas in the currently prominent pronouncement
regarding the formation of culture. After having traced
the key-concepts we shall subject them to a critical assessment
in order to find out what the features are that allow for
a definition of culture.
The speculations about origins of culture will be confronted
with the changes to be observed in the formation of culture.
In this respect we shall focus on the function of the arts
in both the constitution and the life of culture.
The course will start on Friday, January 15; we shall have
a make-up class for the one missed in the first week. In
all likelihood Professor Eric Gans from UCLA will participate
in our discussion of his work.
