We will consider the place
of classical texts in contemporary theory, and the collision,
resistances, and incorporation of contemporary theory in
classical studies. We will read texts of de Man, Derrida,
Deleuze, Irigaray, Lacan, Rancière, and others, as
well as the work of such classicists as Jean-Pierre Vernant,
Marcel Detienne, Giulia Sissa, Froma Zeitlin, Dan Selden,
Leslie Kurke, and others. The course will circle around
Plato, but will take up other classical authors as well.
Students will give oral presentations and write a paper
of a length adequate to summarizing their findings.
Knowledge of Latin and/or Greek is not a requirement.
