The Ina Coolbrith Memorial
Poetry Prize was established by friends of the former California
State Poet Laureate. Undergraduate winners are selected from
all campuses of the University of California and students
at the University of the Pacific, Mills College, Stanford
University , the University of Santa Clara , and St. Mary's
College.
Three submissions are chosen from undergraduate
writing classes by committee.
2004-2005: 49 entries, first
prize, Jennifer Liou ($250, UC Irvine); second prize, Neil
Ferron ($150, Santa Clara University); third prize, Laura
Mattingly (UC Santa Cruz, $100)
2003-2004: 56 entries, first
prize Jamie Michele Gill (UC Davis) and Laura Wetherington
(UC Berkeley) ($150 each); second prize Olivia Friedman (UC
Berkeley) and Tina Sohaili (UC Irvine) ($100 each)
2002-03:
36 entries, first prize awarded to Amaranth Borsuk, UC Los
Angeles ($300); second prize awarded to Christina Ross, UC
Irvine ($200)
Brett Baldwin was a graduate student when he died in 1996. In memory of his love for poetry, the family established awards of cash and books to be given to 1-3 registered undergraduate students who are writing poems. Deadlines are posted each spring by the English Department. Prizes are presented at the Writing Awards Tea.
