The Emphasis
in Creative Writing, centered in the Department
of English, can be added to a Bachelor's Degree.
It offers two levels of workshops - beginning and intermediate
- and two seminars which can lead to graduation with an Emphasis
in Creative Writing. The Emphasis requires 16 units,
a total of 4 courses. Students need to begin work by their
second year, and may take one workshop class per quarter.
:
Fiction:
- Wr31 (Beginning Workshop in Fiction Writing);
- Wr91 (Intermediate Workshop in Fiction Writing);
- E28E (Craft of Fiction);
- WR 101 (W) (Undergraduate
Seminar in Literary Theory)
Poetry:
- Wr30 (Beginning Workshop in Poetry);
- Wr90 (Intermediate Workshop in Poetry);
- E28D (Craft of Poetry);
- WR 101 (W) (Undergraduate
Seminar in Literary Theory)
Wr30 and Wr31 are prerequisites to Wr90 and Wr91. Wr30 and
Wr31 are open for registration by first-year students. (Credit
may also be earned in these classes by non-English majors
to satisfy fulfillment of the 39 Composition Series as a
replacement for 39C, if 39B has been completed with a grade
of B+ or better). Wr30 and Wr31 MAY NOT be taken simultaneously.
Demand for the class regularly exceeds the number of seats
available, but students unable to register by regular means
may petition in the first week. If the number of petitioners
exceeds the number of spots available, instructor may use
writing samples to determine inclusion. Wr30 and Wr31 are
also offered in summer session. Please always review summer
session course listings for any changes or updates.
E28D/E (may be substituted for 28A and C in the Major) and Wr101W are offered once per year in the Fall and Winter, respectively. While Wr101W (substituted for E100 in the major) has a prerequisite (E101), E28D/E does not. These courses may be completedat any time. However, because it frames the Emphasis philosophically and also because space is limited, E28 should be taken as soon as possible, preferably in the second year.
In addition to meetings with departmental advisors, students
should meet with Emphasis coordinator Susan
Davis, particularly if there is difficulty enrolling
in the required classes. See contact information at the end
of this page.
Admission into Advanced Workshops
in Poetry or Fiction is by submission of work only.
They are offered in the Winter and Spring quarters each
year. A student may contact the English Department for
submission guidelines in the 8th week of the previous quarter.
Acceptance is posted outside the English Department in
the 10th week.
