Schaeffer Fellowship in Comparative LiteratureThe Schaeffer Fellowship in Comparative Literature provides $20,000 for the first year of graduate study, with the possibility of additional dissertation-year fellowship. Schaeffer Fellows are selected by a faculty review committee. The Schaeffer Fellowship is provided to Ph.D. students in Comparative Literature for whom translation will be a crucial element of dissertation work. Scholars translating literary or historical texts or archival materials not previously reliably available in English on the way to the writing of their dissertations are eligible for this fellowship. Multiple fellowships per year may be awarded. Scholars who hold the Fellowship will also be expected to participate in a cluster of courses on translation theory and practice offered on the way to the Ph.D. To apply for the Schaeffer Fellowship, you must include the following additional items with your regular application materials: 1/ A detailed essay of no more than 500 words, in which you describe your prior interest and experience in translation studies and literary translation and discuss the area in which you will work on the dissertation project. 2/ An additional writing sample: a literary translation (please include a copy of the original text). Please note: This sample is in addition to the writing sample in criticism and interpretation for admission into the Program. 3/ A cover letter, in which you announce your intention to apply for the fellowship, give the title of the sample translation that you are submitting to the fellowship committee, and outline your intended area(s) of Ph.D. study, and the relation of translation to your research. All submissions for the Schaeffer fellowships must be postmarked by January 15, 2006. Please mail your submissions to:
