The UCI Department of Comparative Literature in the School of Humanities invites you to a sixth lecture in its series:

Ackbar Abbas

“Slowness and volatility,

or, “Waiting for the world to writhe in ecstasy at your feet”

This lecture will trace a history of volatile space through a discussion of the poetics of the 'Long Take,' the problematic subjectivity of the 'Dividual,' the politics of the 'Occupy Movement' in Hong Kong, as well as Kafka's aphorism written in Zurau alluded to in the title.

Ackbar Abbas is Professor of Comparative Literature at UC Irvine with research interests in globalization, Hong Kong and Chinese culture, postcoloniality, critical theory and has written extensively on Hong Kong culture, architecture, and cinema. His books include Hong Kong: Culture and the Politics of Disappearance (University of Minnesota Press, 1997) and Internationalizing Cultural Studies (co-edited with John Erni, Blackwell, 2005).
