Faculty Grants

As part of its mission to promote the development and  dissemination of scholarship, the Humanities Commons awards grants to School of  Humanities faculty and graduate students to support research, conference  travel, publication subvention and conference planning.  Grants are  awarded twice a year in fall and spring quarters.  The Humanities Commons'  internal grant streams are funded through the Academic Senate (CORCL), the UCI  Office of Research, and the UC Humanities Network.
   

Faculty Grants

1) Collaborative Conference Grants   -    Deadline: 10/16/2017
Description
Collaborative Conference grants of $1,500 support academic conferences, symposia or colloquia held at UCI. These grants may also support a lecture series or works-in-progress series during a quarter or the academic year.  A collaborative project must have at least two (2) co-directors – either 2 SOH faculty or 1 SOH faculty and 1 faculty member from another UCI School or university.  One faculty member must be Academic Senate.
Grant funds may be used for honoraria and travel expenses for invited speakers and for catering and conference supplies. 

Timeline:
o Notifications by November 30, 2017
o Funds must be expended by June 30, 2018

Grant Payments: Collaborative conference grant funds will be transferred to the department providing administrative support and expenses processed through that department. 

Submission Instructions:
Applications must be submitted electronically via EEE Scout by 11 pm on Monday, October 16, 2017.

Please complete the online application form with the following information:
• Name, Department and Rank of the Faculty PI
• Organizing Group (if applicable), Conference Name, Dates
• Names and Affiliations of faculty co-organizers
• Grant amount requested

Upload a single PDF document (max 2 pages) with the following:
• A description of the conference or scholar series, its contribution to scholarship in this field/on this topic, and a list of key participants.
• A detailed budget for the conference
• A list of other conference sponsors and sources of funding.

Click “Save” to save your submission and review or complete at a later date.

Once you have completed your online application form, click “Submit Responses” to submit the application.  Application forms cannot be changed once they have been submitted.

EEE Scout does not send an email confirmation.  Go to https://scout.eee/uci.edu and click on “Review My Submissions.” The form should show as submitted (not saved) in this list.

2) Conference Travel (closed)   -    Deadline: N/A
Description
Faculty Conference Travel Grants were awarded in Winter Quarter 2017

Grant funds may be used towards travel expenses, lodging at the conference, and conference registration fees.  They may not be used for conference meals, food while attending the conference or per diem. Preferences: junior and mid-career scholars attending national or major associational conferences in order to advance their research agenda; senior scholars engaged in a new research trajectory attending conferences specific to anew field or who are serving in governance capacity with the scholarly association sponsoring the conference.  Faculty giving presentations will receive priority over those serving as chairs or discussants.

Faculty conference travel grants are funded through an allocation from CORCL.

3) Publication Support   -    Deadline: 10/16/2017
Description
Publication support grants of up to $2,000 will be awarded to projects under contract with a publisher. Grant funds may be used as a subvention to the publisher or for expenses related to preparing the manuscript such as image rights, copy-editing and/or indexing.

Timeline:
o Notifications by November 30, 3017
o Funds must be expended by June 30, 2018

Grant Payments: Publication subvention grants will be paid directly to the press.  Grant funds for publication expenses incurred directly will be transferred into the recipient’s research account and expenses processed through the home department. 

Submission Instructions:
Applications must be submitted electronically on Monday, October 16, 11:00 pm, through EEE Scout.

1. Log into the application form on EEE Scout at https://scout.eee.uci.edu/s/faculty-publication-support-fall2017

2. Complete the online application form with the following information:
o Name, Department and Rank of the faculty applicant
o Requested grant amount
o Book title and publisher

3. Upload a single PDF (max 2 pages) with a description of the book project and a budget identifying how the grant will be used towards publication.

4. Upload a copy of the publication contract.

5. Upload a letter from the publisher either a) identifying expenses that must be paid directly by the author if requesting grant funds for preparing the manuscript for publication OR b) a letter from the publisher requesting subvention.

6. Click “Save” to save your submission and review or complete at a later date.

7. Once you have completed your online application form, click “Submit Responses” to submit the application.  Application forms cannot be changed once they have been submitted.

4) Research (closed)   -    Deadline: N/A
Description
Faculty Research Grants were awarded in Winter Quarter 2017

Faculty Research Grants support expenses related to scholarly research projects, including flights, ground transportation and lodging for research travel; archival and copying fees; the purchase of supplies directly related to the project; translation and transcription of research materials; and graduate student research assistant stipends. Research cannot be used for travel to conferences, food expenses or per diem during travel or for the purchase of computers, printers, other hardware or personal items. 

For collaborative research projects between SOH faculty and faculty from other UCI Schools or universities, grant funds may only be applied to SOH faculty expenses. Collaborative research projects are expected to produce a joint scholarly product.

Faculty can apply separately for Conference Travel grants and Computing grants. Faculty reserch grants are funded through an allocation from CORCL.
