The works listed below should be read prior to taking comprehensive doctoral examinations. It is a matter of program policy that items for the translation portions of the comprehensive doctoral examinations are to be taken from the above list. However, students are also advised that special arrangements for modifications in this list may be made in consultation with the Graduate Advisor

For Roman history the required texts are:

For the Greek exam the prescribed texts are: S. Pomeroy et al., Ancient Greece; R. Osborne, Greece in the Making, 1200-479; S. Hornblower, The Greek World, 479-323. and G. Shipley, The Greek World after Alexander (Routledge, 2000).
