The Archives Board of Trustees and Kate Haw, Director of the Archives of American Art/ Smithsonian Institution, are honored to present Cecile Wihiting with the Lawrence A. Fleischman Award for Scholarly Excellence in the Field of American Art History

'Professor Whiting's influence on the field of American art history has been great, through her wide-ranging work from Warhol to Pop to the effect of World War II on American landscape painting.  The Archives of the American Art | Smithsonian Institution will also be honoring Dorothy Lichtenstein and the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation with an Archives of American Art Medal, so there will be a special resonance to recognizing Professor Whiting's contributions to the field at this moment.'

Past recipients  of the Lawrence A. Fleischman Award include Jules Prown, Barbara Haskell, Wanda Corn, Klaus Kertess, Dore Ashton, Richard Powell, Tom Crow, and others.  The award was established in 1998 by Archives Trustee Barbara G. Fleischman as a tribute to her late husband, who founded the Archives in 1954.  The Fleischman Award carries a $2,500 honorarium and is presented during our annual fall gala in New York.
