“The Incendiary Third Image of Lynching: Santiago Alvarez’s Now! and the Red Summer of 1965”

In this research presentation, Erin Gray discusses the 1965 experimental newsreel, Now!, by Cuban cineaste Santiago Álvarez. She focuses on Alvarez’s incineration of a photograph of the public burning of William Brown in Omaha, Nebraska in 1919, and analyses Álvarez’s use of fire to alter the readability of images of Black revolt.
