The Department of Women’s Studies at UCI offers a graduate emphasis in Feminist Studies which is available to all graduate students at UCI. Participating in the GFE provides students with advanced interdisciplinary training in Feminist Studies, and offers them an opportunity to become part a network of feminist scholars at UCI and beyond. GFE students are subscribed in our email listserv, which features current job openings, fellowship information, and important news about our upcoming events.
GFE students join a vibrant intellectual community, and they can take part in unique opportunities for professional training that complement the offerings of their home departments. Some of the benefits of the GFE program include priority consideration for TA and summer session instructor positions in Women's Studies, eligibility to receive WS conference travel grants, and the ability to receive feedback on work in progress at our interdisciplinary GFE brown bag series.

Currently enrolled graduate students, as well as new students, may apply for admission, though applicants are advised to apply early in their academic career in order to best integrate the Feminist Emphasis with their Departmental plan of study
Graduate students desiring to participate in the Emphasis must take either WS200A or WS200B before they will be considered for admission. After completion of WS200A or WS 200B, students are to apply by the third week of the subsequent quarter for admission to the Emphasis.
The criteria for admission are 1) evidence of previous courses that relate to Feminist Studies and 2) a recommendation by a Women's Studies Core or Affiliate Faculty member. Lack of prior coursework does not preclude admission, so long as a compelling statement of research interest is congruent with the graduate emphasis; however, it is suggested that students with no prior coursework take or audit an upper-division undergraduate course in feminist theory taught by a core Women’s Studies faculty member.

Women's Studies 290: Graduate Directed Research
Women's Studies 290s do not count towards the Graduate Feminist Emphasis, However, graduate students are welcome to contact faculty to set up a 290 for 1) dissertation writing guidance or 2) in depth research on a subject not currently offered as a class. Please see here to print the contract.
