Historic Art Dealer Graham Arader Mentions UCI School of Humanities on Bloomberg

Office of the Dean May 4, 2015

Humanities Studio is currently home to $1M worth of historic art from Arader's collection.

The School of Humanities is proud to have been mentioned by Graham Arader, a well-known historical art dealer and founder of Arader Galleries, during a segment on Christopher Columbus’ atlas on Bloomberg here.

At 3:40 minutes, Graham Arader mentions UC Irvine as one of the college campuses showcasing art from his collection. Thanks to a partnership between Arader and Georges Van Den Abbeele, dean of the School of Humanities, we currently have a wealth of historic art from Arader’s collection available for viewing throughout our Humanities Studio. The artwork features natural history watercolors, woodcuts, engravings, lithographs, chromolithographs and maps dating from the 16th to 19th centuries and is valued at approximately $1 million.

Arader has devoted more than four decades to building a comprehensive gallery of natural history artwork, including hand-colored aquatints and lithographs by John James Audubon and other important ornithological, zoological and botanical artists. In the segment, Arader confirms that Audubon’s works continue to be his most sought-after pieces.

He also explains why it is so important to him that college campuses have his work on display. On an assignment 15 years ago to appraise a Laurance Rockefeller book, Arader saw that Laurance’s father had gifted him a book on his 8th birthday. “Teachers are using this material to inspire kids just like Laurance Rockefeller,” said Arader.
