LUIS BUÑUEL
VIRIDIANA
Together with his contemporaries, Ingmar Bergman and Luchino Visconti, Luis Buñuel is one of the defining filmmakers of the twentieth century. His film, Viridiana, is viewed as his major work in addition to The Exterminating Angel and Belle de jour. Viridiana has often been included among the top films of the history of cinema. The film displays some of the essential traits of Buñuel’s cinematic orientation: the challenging of conventional social and moral stereotypes to uncover their ideological motivations, the subversive power of oniric experiences, and the disruptive insertion of the surreal in everyday life. Viridiana features a superb cast including the renowned Mexican actress, Silvia Pinal, and the equally accomplished Spanish actor, Fernando Rey. The film was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival in 1961 and its presentation provoked strong opposition by the government of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco as well as the Vatican. The film will be presented in the O.V. in Spanish with English subtitles.
