Burma in Crisis: A Forum for the Academy and the Public Pop-Up Panel

When Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi was released from longtime house arrest in 2010, Myanmar's story seemed to have taken a very hopeful turn. This perennial pro-democracy symbol soon took the reins of government. But today, it is Burmese atrocities against the Rohingya ethnic group that have put the country back in the headlines. To the surprise of many, Suu Kyi has done nothing to protect this Burmese minority. And thousands of Rohingya continue to suffer and die as they are forced into flight by the terrible violence.

This panel will explore the humanitarian crisis in Burma, looking at the plight of the Rohingya, the state's actions toward other ethnic minority groups, and the overall human rights situation in the country.
