[What is to be done?] Special Dean's Forum: Should the government support the arts and humanities?

 Humanities Center     May 17 2017 | 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM Humanities Gateway 1010

With federal funding of academic research at risk of being dissolved, we ask ourselves these fundamental questions: should the government be supporting research in the arts and humanities? What do scholars in the arts and humanities accomplish with federal funding and are these accomplishments a public good? What is the future of the U.S. as a hub for the brightest minds in the international playing field if it does not support research and development? Our panel will discuss these questions and share their experiences with federal support of the arts and humanities. There will be ample time for questions from the audience. Featured speakers include:

  • Stephen Barker, dean of UCI’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts
  • David Fedman, associate professor of history at UCI
  • Felicia Kelley, senior program officer at California Humanities
