Film Screening of "Silenced"

 East Asian Studies     Apr 25 2017 | 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM HG 1010

Dear colleagues and friends,

The graduate students at the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures would like to invite you to a quarterly film series. The film screenings are free, and are followed by refreshments and a short discussion.

The first film screening of this quarter will be on Tuesday (4/25) at 5:00pm in Humanities Gateway (HG) 1010. We will be screening: Silenced (2011, Dir. Hwang Dong-hyuk, S. Korea).

Synopsis: Also known as The Crucible, this 2011 film is based on a novel depicting actual events that took place at Gwangju Inhwa School for the hearing-impaired, in South Korea, where young deaf students were the victims of repeated sexual assaults by faculty members over a period of five years in the early 2000s. Silenced sparked public outrage upon its release, and has lead to the legislation of a bill abolishing the statute of limitations for sex crimes against minors and the disabled.

For more information on this week’s film screening and for future events, please check out the attached flyer or visit our Facebook page:
