Stephanie Merrim
Stephanie Merrim (Ph.D. Yale) is Royce Family Professor of Comparative Literature and
Hispanic Studies at Brown University. Professor Merrim's research deals with the early
modern and modern periods, focusing on Latin America. Her book, The Spectacular
City, Mexico, and Colonial Hispanic Literary Culture (Univ. of Texas Press), received the
Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize from the Modern Language Association for an
outstanding work in Hispanic Studies. Previous books include Early Modern Women’s
Writing and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (Vanderbilt Univ. Press), and the important
collection, Feminist Perspectives on Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (Wayne State Univ.
Press). She is presently working on Latin American existentialist literature.
