The director of “The Sky Blue Symphony” is visiting the UC Irvine campus on February 21. Park Yeoung-I, the director, is the third-generation “Zainichi” Korean, who was born and raised in Japan. He filmed this documentary in Japan, South Korea, and North Korea, focusing on the long history of ethnic discrimination against these Zhainich Koreans. The film explores the lives of students who are educated in one of “ethnic schools” in Japan. Although the topic of this documentary deals with political persecution against the ethnic Koreans in Japan, Director Park focuses on the children’s daily lives rather than criticizing a certain political hegemony. 90 minutes of the documentary was filmed in North Korea during the students’ school trip.
