Invitation to Noh: Traditional Masked Drama of Japan

 Humanities Center     Oct 25 2016 | 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Winifred Smith Hall

Noh Drama
Noh, a highly stylized form of theater that integrates music, dance, and chanting with elegant costumes and props, has a tradition of continuous performance that dates back more than 600 years. For this lecture-demonstration Tatsushige Udaka, lead actor of the Kongo Noh school in Kyoto, will demonstrate Noh’s integration of voice, dance, and poetry to express narrative and emotion. Udaka began his training when he was three years old; today he takes part in almost 100 plays a year in Japan, and has performed lecture demonstrations and workshops all around the world.

Organized by Susan Klein, East Asian Languages and Literatures and Daphne Lei, Drama
Sponsored by Illuminations: The Chancellor's Arts and Culture Initiative
